Drow Names Guide | Examples and Naming Conventions for 5E

drow names

The drow – typically referred to as dark elves – are an elven subrace that lives underground. Generally, these elves are chaotic evil marauders that worship Lolth. However, drow do occasionally break from the mold by doing good deeds or dabbling in adventuring. Whether you need to name a player or an NPC for your next campaign, our drow names guide has everything you need. Keep reading for good examples of drow names and the naming conventions behind them.

Drow Names 5E Guide

The Players Handbook sets out the naming conventions for elves just like with any other playable race. However, these naming conventions don’t fit as well for dark elves given their cultural differences.

Drow names do follow some patterns, however. They often contain double letters and generally roll of the tongue. The drow are superstitious, believing names similar to their gods are blasphemy. For that reason you won’t encounter drow with names similar in any way to Lolth. Noble drow also typically choose first names that do not sound like common words used in Deep Drop.

For last names, drow also avoid any names similar to Lolth or that start with an L sound in general. In some drow cultures, last names were reserved for nobility or important members of society.
